Earlier this year I started a project on Instagram called Those Little Shop Fronts. This project is an ode to the yesteryear of Australian Shop Fronts, focusing on Coin Laundries and their endearing windows, designs and art.

With so much development going on, especially in Melbourne with its current population growth, these shops are disappearing and making way for large, sometimes ugly and most of the time uninspiring apartment blocks and new shopping districts.

I specifically chose Instagram as a platform to give viewers the ability to have instant interactions with the photos. I enjoy seeing the natural progression of the project and getting an idea of what the outside also really reacts too. It gives me the chance to make people aware of their surroundings and think, stop and look around instead of just rushing about their day.

The project focuses on the architecture and design of the building not necessarily what goes on inside. It’s like a little history project with the Graphic Designer in me coming out. For the near future the project will be staying on Instagram but I would also like to see this project become a book.
